Androgens are male-type hormones. All women have them in small amounts, and they are a normal part of the body. In PCOS, however, androgens can run higher than usual.
When androgens are higher, they can cause extra facial or body hair, thinning of scalp hair, and acne, especially around the jaw and chin. They can also play a part in irregular periods.
Understanding androgens explains why hair changes and acne so often go together in PCOS. Both come from the same higher-hormone picture.
