Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary, which usually happens about once a month in a regular cycle. After ovulation, if the egg is not fertilised, a period follows a couple of weeks later.

In PCOS, ovulation often becomes irregular. The egg may be released late, or not every month. When ovulation is not steady, periods cannot be steady either, which is why irregular periods are such a common sign of PCOS.
As PCOS is managed with balanced food, movement and weight care, ovulation and periods often become more regular over time.
